Silver Lake

This contemporary home in the trendy Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles presented unique challenges due to its steep terrain and urban setting. The home's front lacked privacy from the street, while the backyard, a naked concrete patio surrounding a pool, sat in the shadow of a three-story apartment building.

A high priority to create privacy screening for the entryway and office was addressed by a vertical ipe wood panel, adding a stunning accent to the new front retaining wall.

The home's rectilinear shapes yield to sweeping forms in the rear garden, where drifts of California lilac, coast rosemary, and olive trees are punctuated by pale blue agave above curved retaining walls and seating. Bamboo and drought-tolerant plantings obscure neighboring buildings while opening onto the larger borrowed landscape of mature trees and the neighboring hillside.

Hillside planting

Pale blue agaves punctuate drought-tolerant plantings. Retaining walls in contrasting blues create an intimate seating area.
